Timothy Busfield Appears In Court On Child Sex Charges, Will Be Held Without Bond

Emmy Award-winning actor Timothy Busfield made his first court appearance on child sex abuse charges in New Mexico on January 14, 2026, where he was ordered held without bond as prosecutors detailed new allegations and a pattern of misconduct spanning decades.

During a brief remote hearing from the Bernalillo County Metropolitan Detention Center, Busfield stood silent in orange prison attire while his attorney addressed the court. The judge scheduled a detention hearing within five business days to determine if he will remain jailed pending trial, with prosecutors arguing that no conditions of release can ensure community safety.

Busfield faces two felony counts of criminal sexual contact with a minor and one count of child abuse, related to incidents alleged to have occurred on the set of the Fox drama ‘The Cleaning Lady’ in Albuquerque. According to the criminal complaint, he is accused of inappropriately touching twin child actors, aged 7 and 8 at the time, over their clothing during filming between November 2022 and spring 2024.

In a motion filed Wednesday, prosecutors revealed a new accusation from a father who reported that Busfield sexually abused his then-16-year-old daughter years ago during an audition at B Street Theatre in Sacramento, which Busfield co-founded. The father, a therapist, alleged that Busfield begged the family not to report the incident to law enforcement in exchange for receiving therapy, an agreement they initially accepted.

The prosecution’s filing alleges a ‘sustained pattern of predatory conduct’ by Busfield dating back to at least 1994, including a settled lawsuit from a 17-year-old extra on the film ‘Little Big League’ and a 2012 battery accusation that did not result in charges. Witnesses have expressed fear of retaliation and professional harm, highlighting how Busfield’s influence in the entertainment industry may have silenced victims.

Busfield has vehemently denied all allegations, with his attorney, Larry Stein, stating that he passed an independent polygraph examination and maintains his innocence. Stein suggested that the mother of the twin accusers might be seeking revenge because her children were not brought back for the final season of ‘The Cleaning Lady.’ Before turning himself in, Busfield recorded a video disseminated to TMZ, calling the charges ‘lies’ and vowing to fight them.

The investigation began in November 2024 after a doctor at the University of New Mexico Hospital alerted police, following reports from the twins’ parents. Warner Bros., the producer of ‘The Cleaning Lady,’ conducted an internal investigation in February 2025 after SAG-AFTRA hotline complaints, but prosecutors criticized the investigation for failing to interview key witnesses, including one of the alleged victims.

Busfield, 68, is married to actress Melissa Gilbert and is known for his roles in popular TV series and films. His case has drawn significant media attention, underscoring broader issues of abuse and accountability in Hollywood. The upcoming detention hearing will be crucial in determining his pretrial custody, with the possibility of a trial that could have lasting implications for his career and the entertainment industry’s handling of misconduct allegations.
