‘Little Rascals’ star living off-the-grid in poverty as ‘Catholic extremist’ after arrest over huffing air duster cans

Bug Hall, the former child actor best known for playing Alfalfa in the 1994 film ‘The Little Rascals,’ has left Hollywood behind to embrace a life of poverty and radical Catholicism in rural Arkansas, a transformation spurred by his 2020 arrest for huffing air duster cans. In a recent interview, the 40-year-old described himself as a ‘radical Catholic extremist’ and has taken a vow of poverty, donating his savings and most material possessions to live as income-free as possible with his wife and five daughters in a campervan.

Hall’s arrest in Weatherford, Texas, for misdemeanor possession of inhalants served as a wake-up call that prompted his departure from the entertainment industry. Although he faced no charges, the public incident made him realize he no longer wanted to participate in what he saw as a manipulative and addictive lifestyle. Prior to the arrest, Hall had been sober for 15 years, but the experience solidified his decision to pursue a path of simplicity and religious devotion.

Now residing near Mountain Home, Arkansas, Hall and his family are fully committed to homesteading. They live in a campervan equipped with a water well and generator, and Hall plans to eventually build a house with its own hydro-electrical dam and self-sufficient plumbing and electrical systems. His goal is to become completely off-the-grid, minimizing reliance on external resources and maintaining a life free from financial obligations.

The actor’s wife, Jill, whom he married in 2017, homeschools their five daughters, and Hall intends to ‘strongly discourage’ them from attending formal school or college, which he views as ‘nonsense.’ This educational approach is part of his broader critique of modern society and his desire to raise his children in accordance with his Catholic values, away from mainstream influences.

Hall’s move to Arkansas is not an isolated one; his younger brother, mother, and stepfather have also relocated to the area and purchased plots of land, indicating a family-wide shift towards this alternative lifestyle. This community support underscores the depth of his commitment to leaving behind his Hollywood past and building a new life rooted in faith and self-sufficiency.

Reflecting on his career, Hall expressed a love for filmmaking but criticized the industry for promoting distraction and meaninglessness. He stated that he didn’t want to work jobs that merely entertained or distracted people, preferring instead to focus on his family and religious beliefs. His post-arrest perspective has led him to value authenticity and avoidance of manipulation, both in his interactions and creative outputs.

As Hall looks to the future, he remains focused on his homesteading projects and maintaining his vow of poverty. He acknowledges that occasional financial needs may arise, in which case he will take on odd jobs for cash, but his overarching aim is to sustain a lifestyle that requires minimal income. This radical change highlights a dramatic shift from child stardom to a secluded, principled existence, driven by personal crisis and spiritual conviction.
