Spurs’ Wembanyama ‘horrified’ by Minnesota shootings

San Antonio Spurs star Victor Wembanyama has publicly condemned the recent fatal shootings of two Minnesota residents by federal agents, describing himself as ‘horrified’ and stating that the murder of civilians is unacceptable. The 21-year-old French player made these remarks on Tuesday, speaking out despite advice from team PR and acknowledging his status as a non-U.S. citizen.

The shootings occurred during an immigration enforcement operation in Minneapolis, resulting in the deaths of Alex Pretti, a 37-year-old ICU nurse, and Renee Good, a 37-year-old mother of three. These events have sparked protests in freezing conditions and increased tensions between the community and law enforcement.

Wembanyama expressed his reluctance to speak but emphasized his horror at the news. ‘Every day I wake up and see the news, and I’m horrified,’ he said. ‘I think it’s crazy that some people might make it seem like or make it sound like the murder of civilians is acceptable.’

His comments come after the National Basketball Players Association urged players to speak out, and fellow Frenchman Guerschon Yabusele of the New York Knicks posted support for Minnesota on social media. Wembanyama praised Yabusele for speaking his mind but noted that such actions can have consequences.

Investigations into the shootings are ongoing, with no charges filed yet. The cases have drawn national attention, raising questions about enforcement practices and immigration policies.

Wembanyama admitted to fearing repercussions for his statements, saying ‘for sure’ when asked if he was concerned. He added that while he has deep questions, he is cautious about being too vocal to avoid high costs.

The situation in Minneapolis remains volatile, with continued calls for justice. Wembanyama’s intervention adds a prominent sports voice to the discourse, potentially influencing public debate and encouraging other athletes to engage on social issues.

Looking forward, his stance may prompt further discussion within the NBA about the role of athletes in social justice, as the investigations seek accountability and address underlying tensions.
