Iran war update: Vance puts positive spin on talks, but widespread skepticism remains

Vice President JD Vance announced Monday that U.S.-Iran negotiations in Switzerland have made significant progress, including an agreement allowing International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) inspectors to return to Iran for nuclear monitoring.

Vance characterized the talks, which took place at the Bürgenstock Resort and lasted more than 18 hours, as “a very, very good day” in which the U.S. accomplished its objectives. He met with Iran’s parliamentary speaker Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf on June 21 and 22 as part of efforts to negotiate an end to the Middle East conflict that began in February.

The vice president stated that the first round of talks had established a “good foundation” for reaching a final deal, though Iran has not publicly confirmed the agreement regarding nuclear inspectors. A U.S. official characterized the talks as successful and dismissed reports of any snub as “foreign propaganda.”

Despite the administration’s optimistic framing, widespread skepticism persists, with a growing number of Republican lawmakers raising concerns about the negotiations. Lingering issues remain unresolved, including concerns over Lebanon and the Strait of Hormuz.
