A federal judge has blocked the Trump administration from creating a centralized database containing Social Security numbers, citizenship status, and other sensitive personal information about Americans. U.S. District Judge Sparkle Sooknanan, a Biden appointee, ruled that officials across multiple government agencies violated the law by “haphazardly” combining and repurposing the private data of millions of people.
The database was designed as a voter-screening tool intended to identify and remove non-citizens from voter rolls. The judge found that the administration’s approach to consolidating Americans’ personal records was unlawful and raised significant privacy concerns.
The ruling represents a legal setback for the administration’s efforts to verify voter citizenship and maintain election integrity through centralized data compilation.
