Carlos Santana, Patti Smith and Other Celebs Pay Tribute to Clive Davis

Clive Davis, one of the music industry’s most influential executives, has died at age 94. Davis rose from a midlevel position at Columbia Records to become one of music’s most powerful figures, shaping the careers of some of the world’s biggest stars.

During his decades-long career, Davis signed and worked with numerous legendary artists including Whitney Houston, Bruce Springsteen, Barry Manilow, Billy Joel, Janis Joplin, Aerosmith, Pink Floyd, and Alicia Keys. His ability to identify and nurture talent made him a transformative force in popular music across multiple genres and generations.

Following his death on Monday, Davis received tributes from the artists he mentored. Bruce Springsteen noted that Davis “treated me with the same respect and kindness as a 22-year-old nobody as he did after all my success,” reflecting Davis’s approach to working with artists at all stages of their careers.

Davis’s legacy extends beyond the individual stars he signed, as he fundamentally shaped the trajectory of modern popular music through his executive decisions and artist development philosophy.
