The United States has temporarily lifted sanctions on Iranian oil exports following talks between the two countries. Vice President JD Vance cited progress in negotiations and said the move demonstrates that a “foundation” is in place for a final agreement.
According to US officials, Iran has agreed to allow UN nuclear inspectors to return to the country as part of the agreement. The inspectors’ access had been effectively halted after Israeli and US military strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities last summer, prompting Tehran to suspend cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
However, Iran’s foreign ministry disputed the characterization of the talks, stating it made “no new commitments” on nuclear inspections. This disagreement highlights a significant gap in how the two sides are describing the outcome of their negotiations.
The agreement includes other measures such as reopening the Strait of Hormuz, a critical waterway for global oil shipping. The US has suspended sanctions for 60 days while ongoing negotiations continue on allowing nuclear inspections and stabilizing the strategic strait.
These talks mark a significant step in renewed diplomatic efforts between the US and Iran aimed at addressing the country’s nuclear program and reducing regional tensions.
