Gervonta Davis, the WBA lightweight champion, was arrested in Miami on Wednesday after a two-week search by authorities, facing charges of battery, false imprisonment, and attempted kidnapping following an alleged domestic violence incident. Davis was taken into custody without incident in the Miami Design District after a surveillance operation involving Miami Gardens Police and the U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force. The arrest warrant was issued on January 14, stemming from an incident that allegedly occurred on October 27 at a local strip club.
According to police reports, Davis confronted his ex-girlfriend, Courtney Rossel, at the club where she worked as a VIP cocktail server. He allegedly grabbed her by the hair and throat, saying, “You think I would not find you,” before forcibly moving her to a back room and later to the parking lot, where she was eventually released. The victim reported the incident to authorities, and video surveillance footage corroborated key elements of her statement, as noted by lead detective Gary Florencio.
In addition to the criminal charges, Rossel has filed a civil lawsuit against Davis, accusing him of battery, aggravated battery, false imprisonment, kidnapping, and intentional infliction of emotional distress. She is seeking compensatory and punitive damages exceeding $50,000 and has requested a jury trial. Her attorney, Jeff Chukwuma, stated that the police investigation aligned with their lawsuit, leading to the arrest warrant.
The legal troubles have impacted Davis’s boxing career, notably leading to the cancellation of a scheduled exhibition fight against YouTuber-turned-boxer Jake Paul in Miami on November 14.
