Ja Morant trade guide: Four proposals for Memphis — if it can find a suitor

The Memphis Grizzlies have opened trade discussions for star guard Ja Morant, with multiple teams expressing interest as the NBA trade deadline approaches. This development marks a potential end to Morant’s turbulent seven-year tenure in Memphis, where his on-court brilliance has been overshadowed by off-court controversies and injuries.

Ja Morant, a two-time All-Star and former Most Improved Player, has seen his production decline this season, averaging career lows in points and shooting efficiency. His relationship with the Grizzlies’ new coach, Tuomas Iisalo, has been strained, leading to a one-game suspension for conduct detrimental to the team. Morant’s frustrations have reportedly grown, with sources indicating he feels alienated from teammates and may be seeking a fresh start elsewhere.

According to reports from ESPN and The Athletic, the Grizzlies are actively listening to offers for Morant ahead of the February 5 trade deadline. Several teams, including the Miami Heat, Milwaukee Bucks, Toronto Raptors, and Minnesota Timberwolves, have emerged as potential suitors. Trade proposals involve players like Tyler Herro, Kyle Kuzma, Immanuel Quickley, and draft picks, reflecting Morant’s diminished but still significant market value.

Financial considerations play a key role in any potential deal. Morant has three years remaining on his contract, with salaries averaging around $42 million annually, making him a substantial cap hit for acquiring teams. However, his contract is less burdensome than it could have been, as he missed out on a supermax extension by not making All-NBA in 2022-23, which eases trade logistics under the NBA’s new collective bargaining agreement.

On the court, Morant’s struggles are evident. He is shooting a career-worst 40% from the field and 21% from three-point range, with reduced efficiency at the rim. Injuries have also plagued him, as he has missed significant time in recent seasons, including a calf strain this year. Despite this, teams believe a change of scenery could rejuvenate his game, given his past accolades and explosive playing style.

The Grizzlies’ decision to explore trades comes amid a disappointing 16-21 start to the season, placing them 10th in the Western Conference. After consecutive deep playoff runs earlier in Morant’s career, the team has faltered, and management may be pivoting towards a rebuild or retooling around other assets. Trading Morant could provide draft capital and young players to accelerate this process.

Looking ahead, the most plausible trade destinations include the Raptors and Heat, who have the assets and need for a point guard upgrade. The Raptors offer a package centered on Immanuel Quickley and a first-round pick, while the Heat could send Tyler Herro. Any deal will likely require careful negotiation, as Morant’s value is uncertain due to his recent performance and off-court issues.
