Hugh Jackman tours Midwest, meets fans for ‘Song Sung Blue’

Hugh Jackman has embarked on a grassroots promotional tour across the Midwest for the film “Song Sung Blue,” engaging directly with fans and highlighting the movie’s true-life inspiration. The actor, alongside co-star Kate Hudson, visited cities like Milwaukee, Memphis, and Muncie, creating a buzz ahead of the Christmas Day release.

The tour began with a hometown premiere in Milwaukee, where the real-life musicians Mike and Claire Sardina formed their Neil Diamond tribute band, Lightning & Thunder. Jackman participated in a screening hosted by local reporter Gino Salomone, who had previously hired the band. In a touching gesture, Claire Sardina was surprised with a dedicated bench to be displayed annually at the Wisconsin State Fair, celebrating her connection to the community.

Jackman’s activities extended to Milwaukee High School of the Arts, where he surprised choir students with high-fives, inspirational talks, and new musical instruments. He also served “Song Sung Blue-Berry” frozen custard at Kopp’s in Greenfield, Wisconsin, drawing crowds of fans. These efforts are part of Focus Features’ strategy to promote the film beyond traditional coastal cities, emphasizing its Midwestern roots.

Director Craig Brewer, in an interview with Third Coast Review, discussed the film’s authentic portrayal of the Sardinas’ story, noting the challenges of shooting in real locations to capture a gritty, lived-in feel. Brewer, known for “Hustle & Flow,” highlighted the movie’s themes of perseverance and community, which resonate through the tour’s events. The film blends musical performances with a narrative about overcoming adversity.

Kate Hudson, who plays Claire Sardina, has earned a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actress in a Musical/Comedy for her role. During the tour, Hudson and Jackman performed impromptu Neil Diamond songs, including at a New York City bar, adding to the festive promotion. The campaign also partners with the United Service Organizations and the Bob Woodruff Foundation, acknowledging Mike Sardina’s military background.

The tour underscores the film’s message of dreaming big, as Jackman told students, “This movie…is not just about dreaming big. It’s about dreaming huge.” Events in Cleveland, Nashville, and Austin featured collaborations with local institutions like the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and local musicians, embedding the movie in cultural landscapes. In Las Vegas, a screening included a Neil Diamond impersonator, celebrating tribute artists.

As “Song Sung Blue” nears its nationwide release, the tour has successfully connected the stars with the communities depicted, generating anticipation through personal interactions. This innovative marketing approach not only promotes the film but also honors the real-life story, making it relatable to audiences across the country.
