With Lions loss, Bears clinch first playoff berth in five years

The Chicago Bears have ended a five-year playoff drought, clinching a berth in the 2025 NFL postseason after the Detroit Lions fell to the Pittsburgh Steelers 29-24 on Sunday. This milestone was secured less than 24 hours after the Bears’ own thrilling 22-16 overtime victory over the Green Bay Packers, capping a dramatic weekend that positions them as a contender in the NFC.

On Saturday night, the Bears staged a remarkable comeback against their historic rivals, the Packers. Trailing 16-6 late in the fourth quarter, they scored 10 points in the final two minutes to force overtime, where quarterback Caleb Williams connected with wide receiver DJ Moore on a 46-yard touchdown pass to win the game. This victory not only avenged a Week 14 loss but also marked their sixth comeback win this season, the most in the NFL, showcasing their clutch performance under pressure.

Under first-year head coach Ben Johnson, the Bears have transformed their fortunes, improving to an 11-4 record after starting the season 0-2. They have won 11 of their last 13 games, demonstrating resilience with a league-leading six victories after trailing in the final two minutes of regulation. This turnaround is a stark contrast to recent seasons, where close games often ended in defeat, and it reflects the team’s improved depth and strategic adjustments.

The Bears’ last playoff appearance was in 2020, when they sneaked in as a wild card with an 8-8 record before being eliminated in the first round by the New Orleans Saints. Only three players from that team remain—tight end Cole Kmet, cornerback Jaylon Johnson, and kicker Cairo Santos—highlighting the roster overhaul that has brought new energy and talent, including rookie quarterback Caleb Williams, who has been instrumental in late-game heroics.

Currently, the Bears hold the No. 2 seed in the NFC, behind the Seattle Seahawks. They lead the NFC North by a game and a half over the Packers and can clinch the division title by winning one of their final two games or if Green Bay loses once. Their remaining schedule includes a crucial “Sunday Night Football” matchup at the San Francisco 49ers in Week 17 and a season finale at home against the Lions, which could have seeding implications.

The clinching of a playoff berth was confirmed when the Lions lost to the Steelers, as the Bears needed that result to secure their spot regardless of other outcomes. This dependency on another game’s result added to the anticipation, but the team had already done its part with the win over Green Bay, setting the stage for Sunday’s celebration. Players have expressed optimism and a sense of building momentum. Kmet noted that this season feels different from his rookie year in 2020, with sustained success that bodes well for the postseason. Coach Johnson emphasized the team’s focus on continuous improvement, aiming to peak at the right time.

Looking ahead, the Bears aim to secure a higher seed and potentially a first-round bye, which would be their first since 2010. With their recent form and ability to win tight games, they are poised to make a deep playoff run, aiming to end a championship drought that dates back to 1985. The upcoming game against the 49ers will be a key test, offering a preview of potential playoff matchups and an opportunity to solidify their standing.
