Weezer bassist Scott Shriner’s estranged wife, Jillian Lauren, breaks silence on being shot by cops, ‘painful’ divorce

Jillian Lauren, the estranged wife of Weezer bassist Scott Shriner, has broken her silence for the first time since being shot by Los Angeles police and filing for divorce, describing the events as deeply painful and revealing her enrollment in a mental health diversion program. In an interview with Rolling Stone, Lauren shared that her “world fell to pieces” after the April incident, where she was involved in a confrontation with police near her Eagle Rock home.

On April 21, 2025, Lauren interfered with a police chase in her neighborhood, exiting her home with a handgun after officers barricaded the area. She refused multiple commands to drop the weapon and pointed it toward police, leading to officers shooting her in the arm. Lauren was subsequently arrested on suspicion of attempted murder of a peace officer, though charges were later reduced to assault and negligent discharge of a firearm. She explained that her actions were driven by a desire to protect her family, stating, “I was doing the best I knew to protect my family. [The] impulse was self-defense.”

Lauren is now enrolled in a two-year mental health diversion program, which is expected to result in the dismissal of her charges upon successful completion. The case remains officially open, but this program allows her to address underlying issues rather than face incarceration. She has been diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and attributes part of her trauma to past experiences as a victim of sex trafficking and domestic violence. Lauren expressed relief that the program highlights mental health, saying she is in a position to speak openly about these struggles.

The shooting incident became a “crisis” point in her marriage to Scott Shriner, whom she had been with for 20 years. Lauren filed for divorce on December 2, 2025, citing irrereconcilable differences, and described the process as painful, especially when it became public. Despite the split, she considers Shriner her “best friend” and emphasized that they had been growing apart for years before the separation. She noted, “We’re people who grow. We’re passionate people. We’re creative people. You hope you’ll change and grow together. We grew apart.”

Lauren and Shriner share two adopted sons, Tariku Moon and Jovanni “Jovi” Starshine, and she stressed that they continue to support each other as co-parents. The couple’s relationship had been strained, but she acknowledged that the divorce was a mutual decision influenced by the traumatic events of the past year. Lauren’s focus is now on her recovery and family, balancing her mental health treatment with parenting responsibilities.

In her interview, Lauren revealed that she is considering writing a book about her experiences, something she was initially hesitant about but now sees as a way to share her story and help others. She hopes that by speaking out, she can reduce stigma around mental health and trauma, particularly for survivors of violence. Her journey through the legal system and personal struggles has been challenging, but she remains optimistic about the future.

The case has drawn attention to issues of police interactions and mental health, with Lauren’s diversion program serving as an alternative to traditional prosecution. Legal experts note that such programs are increasingly used for non-violent offenders with mental health conditions, aiming to provide treatment rather than punishment. Lauren’s openness about her PTSD and past trauma could inspire similar approaches in other cases.

As Lauren continues with her program and divorce proceedings, she aims to rebuild her life and focus on her writing career. She expressed gratitude for the support she has received and emphasized the importance of empathy and understanding in dealing with complex personal crises. The outcome of her legal case and personal healing will be closely watched by those following her story.
