Katharine McPhee reveals the hardest part of touring with husband David Foster

Katharine McPhee, the “American Idol” alum, recently discussed the ups and downs of touring with her husband, famed music producer David Foster, in an interview with Page Six. She highlighted that while performing together brings immense joy, the constant travel and lack of sleep pose significant challenges.

McPhee explained that the most difficult aspect isn’t marital tension but rather the physical toll of touring. ‘The hard part of the tour is actually just like not sleeping very well,’ she said, noting the relentless schedule that shuttles them between tour buses and hotels. Despite this, she joked that they ‘do OK, we don’t kill each other,’ emphasizing their ability to handle the stress together.

The couple recently wrapped up a 12-date Christmas tour, with their final show in Fort Lauderdale on December 14, and are set to embark on a more extensive 19-date tour titled ‘An Intimate Evening with David Foster & Katharine McPhee’ starting January 30, 2026. This upcoming tour promises to blend Foster’s legendary hits with McPhee’s vocal talents, offering fans a unique collaborative experience.

Their relationship has deep roots, beginning in 2006 when McPhee was a contestant on ‘American Idol’ and Foster served as her mentor. At the time, their connection was purely professional, with Foster producing her first single and even performing at her first wedding. McPhee recalls that neither was looking for romance, calling their initial dynamic ‘a workplace [thing].’

Over the years, their friendship gradually evolved into romance, surprising both of them. McPhee believes this foundation of friendship is key to their strong bond today. ‘That’s where the bond comes from, I think, more than anything,’ she explained, adding that it conveniently allows her to assist with demos or other musical projects.

The couple married in 2019 and welcomed their son, Rennie, in 2021. Balancing parenthood with touring adds another layer of complexity, but McPhee finds ways to integrate family life into their busy schedule. She credits their long history and mutual respect for making their partnership work both on and off stage.

Beyond touring, McPhee remains active in her acting career, currently starring in the TV series ‘The Artist,’ where she plays vaudeville star Nora Bayes. She took the role at the urging of a longtime friend and producer, showcasing her versatility across entertainment fields.

Looking ahead, McPhee and Foster plan to continue their musical collaborations while managing the demands of travel and family. Their story reflects a modern celebrity partnership where shared passions and a solid friendship help navigate the challenges of life in the spotlight, offering inspiration to fans and couples alike.
