Eagles take down Commanders to clinch NFC East title

The Philadelphia Eagles clinched the NFC East title for the second straight season with a 29-18 win over the Washington Commanders on Saturday night, becoming the first team to repeat as division champions since 2004. This victory secured a playoff spot for the Eagles and simultaneously eliminated the Dallas Cowboys from postseason contention.

After a sluggish start, the Eagles found themselves trailing 10-7 at halftime, hampered by missed field goals from kicker Jake Elliott and a fumble on their opening drive. However, the momentum shifted in the second half as the Commanders lost quarterback Marcus Mariota to a hand injury, forcing third-stringer Josh Johnson into action. Johnson’s first possession ended with an interception by Eagles cornerback Cooper DeJean, setting up a touchdown that gave Philadelphia a lead they would not relinquish.

Eagles running back Saquon Barkley was instrumental in the comeback, rushing for 132 yards and a touchdown on 21 carries, including a powerful 12-yard score in the fourth quarter that exemplified his physical running style. Quarterback Jalen Hurts contributed efficiently, completing 22 of 30 passes for 185 yards and two touchdowns without any turnovers, while wide receiver A.J. Brown caught nine passes for 95 yards to keep the offense moving.

On the defensive side, the Eagles capitalized on Washington’s quarterback woes, with Johnson struggling mightily after replacing Mariota. The Commanders, who were already without starting quarterback Jayden Daniels for the season, managed only a late touchdown by running back Chris Rodriguez Jr. to narrow the gap, but it was too little too late.

The game was not without controversy, as a late scuffle led to the ejections of Eagles guard Tyler Steen and Commanders defensive tackle Javon Kinlaw and safety Quan Martin. This incident could add fuel to the fire when the two teams meet again in the final week of the regular season, though it had no impact on the outcome of this contest.

With the division title secured, the Eagles have guaranteed themselves a home game in the wild-card round of the playoffs. They currently hold a 10-5 record and are in contention for a top-four seed in the NFC, though their chances of earning the No. 1 seed are slim, requiring them to win out and get significant help from other teams.

Head coach Nick Sirianni acknowledged the difficulty of repeating as division winners, emphasizing that the team has bigger goals in mind. “It’s hard to do this,” Sirianni said. “We’re happy about that, but we’ve got a lot to clean up and a lot more goals on our mind,” referring to the upcoming playoffs and the pursuit of another Super Bowl championship.

Looking ahead, the Eagles will face the Buffalo Bills in Week 17 before a rematch with the Commanders to close the regular season. While they have little to play for in terms of playoff positioning, maintaining momentum and avoiding injuries will be key as they prepare for a deep postseason run, aiming to defend their Super Bowl title from last season.
