The bodies of acclaimed Hollywood director Rob Reiner and his wife Michele have been returned to their family following autopsies that confirmed they died from multiple stab wounds, with their son Nick charged in connection with their deaths. This development allows the family to begin funeral preparations nearly a week after the tragic discovery.
On Friday, December 19, the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner released the bodies after completing autopsies, which determined the cause of death as sharp force injuries consistent with homicide. Rob, 78, and Michele, 70, were found dead in their Brentwood-area home on Sunday, December 14, after a massage therapist grew concerned upon being unable to reach them.
Their daughter Romy, 27, arrived at the home and discovered her father’s body, fleeing without realizing her mother had also been fatally stabbed. Paramedics later informed her of the full extent of the tragedy. Within approximately six hours, authorities arrested Nick Reiner, 32, near the University of Southern California.
Nick has been charged with two counts of first-degree murder, with special circumstances for multiple murders and an allegation that he used a dangerous and deadly weapon, such as a knife. Prosecutors are not ruling out the death penalty, and he is being held without bail, with an arraignment set for January 7, 2026.
The case has been complicated by Nick’s long-standing struggles with addiction and homelessness. Sources close to the family revealed that he had a ‘very loud argument’ with his father at a party hosted by Conan O’Brien just hours before the murders, indicating escalating tensions.
In a heartfelt statement shared with PEOPLE and TMZ, the couple’s other children, Jake and Romy, expressed their devastation: ‘Words cannot even begin to describe the unimaginable pain we are experiencing every moment of the day. They weren’t just our parents; they were our best friends.’ They have appealed for privacy and compassion as they grieve.
Nick’s attorney, Alan Jackson, who has represented high-profile clients like Harvey Weinstein, described the situation as a ‘devastating tragedy’ and emphasized the need for a fair legal process without premature judgments. The Reiners’ Hollywood friends, including Billy Crystal and Albert Brooks, are reportedly providing support to the siblings.
Rob Reiner, known for directing classics such as ‘When Harry Met Sally…’ and ‘The Princess Bride,’ and Michele, a respected photographer, were married in 1989 and were beloved figures in the entertainment community. As the family moves forward with burial plans, potentially adhering to Jewish traditions, the legal proceedings will continue to unfold, with the possibility of a capital case adding to the gravity of the situation.
