India summons Bangladesh envoy over security concerns

India summoned Bangladesh’s High Commissioner to New Delhi on Wednesday, December 17, 2025, to convey strong concerns over a deteriorating security situation in Bangladesh, particularly threats targeting the Indian mission in Dhaka, amid escalating diplomatic tensions between the two neighbors.

On December 17, India’s Ministry of External Affairs summoned Bangladesh High Commissioner Riaz Hamidullah, informing him of India’s worries about the security environment in Bangladesh. The focus was on specific threats by extremist elements who have announced plans to create a security situation around the Indian High Commission in Dhaka, which New Delhi described as a matter of serious concern.

This move came just two days after Bangladesh summoned the Indian High Commissioner in Dhaka to protest over what it termed ‘incendiary statements’ made by former prime minister Sheikh Hasina from Indian soil. Hasina, who fled to India in August 2024 amid mass protests, has been a point of contention, with Dhaka repeatedly seeking her extradition and ties turning frosty.

Bangladesh is preparing for a national election on February 12, 2026, under an interim administration led by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus. The political landscape is tense, with protests and counterprotests reported in recent weeks. The interim government has faced criticism for not conducting thorough investigations into incidents that India finds concerning.

During the meeting, India completely rejected what it called a false narrative being promoted by extremist groups regarding recent events in Bangladesh. It expressed regret that the interim government had neither shared meaningful evidence nor conducted a proper investigation. New Delhi reiterated its support for peace, stability, and free, fair elections in Bangladesh.

Reports indicate that threats have been made by figures like Hasnat Abdullah of the National Citizen Party, who delivered anti-India rhetoric and warned of isolating India’s northeastern states. His comments, referencing the vulnerable ‘Chicken’s Neck’ corridor, have been seen as direct threats to regional security, adding to the diplomatic strain.

There was no immediate comment from Bangladesh authorities on India’s summoning of their envoy. This silence contrasts with the earlier proactive step by Dhaka in summoning the Indian envoy, highlighting the bilateral tensions. The exchange underscores the fragile state of India-Bangladesh relations at a critical juncture.

The diplomatic row occurs amid heightened political tensions in Bangladesh ahead of the elections. India’s concerns over security and stability could impact regional dynamics, especially with shared borders and historical ties. Both nations may need to engage in dialogue to de-escalate and ensure a peaceful electoral process.
