Men posing as India’s central bank officials pull off $800,000 heist

In a daring daylight robbery, armed men impersonating officials from India’s Reserve Bank intercepted a cash van in Bengaluru and escaped with approximately $800,000, sparking a widespread police investigation. The heist, which unfolded on Wednesday afternoon, has raised alarms over security protocols for financial transport in one of India’s major cities.

The incident occurred when six men in an SUV stopped the cash-transport van on a busy road in the heart of Bengaluru. Posing as RBI officials, they claimed to need verification of documents for the large sum of money being moved between bank branches. The van was carrying a driver, a cash custodian, and two armed security guards at the time of the robbery.

According to Bengaluru police commissioner Seemant Kumar Singh, the gang instructed the guards to leave their weapons in the van and enter the SUV, while the driver was told to continue driving. The SUV followed the van for several kilometers before the suspects forced the driver out, transferred the cash at gunpoint, and fled the scene. This methodical approach allowed them to seize 70 million rupees (equivalent to $800,000) without immediate resistance.

Police have launched a massive search operation, recovering the SUV used in the heist, which featured a fake number plate and a “Government of India” sticker. Initial investigations reveal that the area had limited CCTV coverage, hindering efforts to track the suspects. Authorities are exploring whether the gang employed multiple vehicles and if any insiders from the cash transportation company were involved, given the precision of the operation.

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah confirmed the recovery of the vehicle but noted that the escape vehicle remains unidentified. Home Minister G Parameshwara expressed confidence in solving the case quickly, drawing parallels to a recent high-profile bank robbery in May where 59kg of gold was stolen in Vijayapura district. In that incident, police recovered 39kg of gold and arrested 15 people, including former employees, demonstrating a pattern of sophisticated heists in the region.

The robbery has prompted a review of security measures for cash transport in urban areas, highlighting vulnerabilities that criminal groups exploit. Police are appealing for public assistance and enhancing surveillance to prevent similar incidents. This event underscores the ongoing challenges in safeguarding financial assets against audacious crimes in rapidly growing cities like Bengaluru.

As the investigation progresses, authorities aim to apprehend the suspects and reinforce protocols to restore public trust. The heist serves as a reminder of the need for continuous improvement in security frameworks to deter such brazen acts in the future.
