Rose McGowan claims ‘Charmed’ execs checked her weight each season: ‘They would circle around me’

Actress Rose McGowan has revealed that executives on the TV show ‘Charmed’ would monitor her weight at the start of each season, describing a toxic on-set environment. She made these claims in a recent podcast interview, highlighting ongoing issues in Hollywood.

In a candid discussion on the ‘We Need to Talk’ podcast hosted by Paul C. Brunson, McGowan recounted how ‘Charmed’ producers would ‘circle around’ her to assess her appearance whenever she returned for a new season. The 52-year-old actress, who played Paige Matthews from 2001 to 2006, described this behavior as executives ‘inspecting their product,’ a practice she said was considered ‘completely fine’ at the time despite its invasive nature.

McGowan joined ‘Charmed’ in its fourth season, replacing Shannen Doherty’s character Prue Halliwell, which she acknowledged was a challenging transition. She felt pressured to appear ‘super nonthreatening’ and tailored her performance to be more likable, even pitching her voice higher and adopting a softer demeanor. This effort was part of her strategy to win over fans who were loyal to Doherty, whom she was told had been fired from the show.

The weight monitoring was just one aspect of what McGowan called a ‘nasty set’ with ‘super corporate’ dynamics. She recalled instances where executives threatened severe consequences for minor infractions, such as smoking a joint, warning they would sue her and pursue her family’s wages. McGowan compared the entertainment industry to being ‘far worse than the cult I grew up in,’ referring to her upbringing in the Children of God group.

Beyond the weight checks, McGowan faced other constraints on her personal style. During her time on ‘Charmed,’ she was required to hire a stylist at significant cost and was discouraged from wearing ‘editorial’ or edgy fashion, instead being dressed in more conventional red-carpet looks with heavy makeup and styled hair. This contrasted with her previous independence in managing her appearance for events.

Reflecting on her experience, McGowan expressed skepticism about whether Hollywood has truly evolved, suggesting that the industry only ‘pay[s] lip service’ to change. She noted that while some practices might be less overt today, underlying issues of control and objectification persist. Her revelations come amid ongoing conversations about workplace treatment in the entertainment sector.

McGowan’s relationship with her ‘Charmed’ co-stars has been complex. She emphasized that she refused to be pitted against Shannen Doherty, and the two later developed a friendship before Doherty’s death in 2024. McGowan hosted an episode of Doherty’s podcast, where she shared regrets about not connecting sooner and praised Doherty’s character despite misconceptions.

The actress has previously spoken about the physical and emotional toll of filming ‘Charmed,’ including suffering from panic attacks, frequent illnesses, and undergoing hypnotherapy to cope. She gained weight intentionally for the role to appear less threatening, a decision that highlights the intense scrutiny actors face regarding their bodies.

McGowan’s claims add to a growing body of testimonials about toxic environments in television and film production. As more actors come forward with similar stories, there is increased pressure on studios to implement better practices and support systems. Her interview serves as a reminder of the need for continued advocacy and reform in Hollywood.
