Haney becomes 3-division champ in dominant win

Devin Haney emphatically answered doubts about his durability and weight class transition by dominating Brian Norman Jr. to claim the WBO welterweight title, securing his status as a three-division world champion in a commanding performance on Saturday.

The bout took place at ANB Arena in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, as part of The Ring IV: Night of Champions card. Haney, improving to 33-0 with 15 knockouts, won by unanimous decision with judges’ scores of 117-110, 116-111, and 114-113, showcasing his superiority over the previously unbeaten Norman.

A pivotal moment came in the second round when Haney landed a sharp right hand that sent Norman to the canvas. This early knockdown set the tone for the fight, demonstrating Haney’s power at the new weight and his ability to hurt a noted puncher, and it left Norman’s nose bloodied and eye swelling as the contest progressed.

Throughout the match, Haney utilized a precise jab to control the distance and pace, effectively neutralizing Norman’s aggression. His defensive skills and ring generalship were on full display, as he avoided significant damage while accumulating points, and he surprised many by standing his ground in the pocket to land effective check hooks.

Norman, celebrating his 25th birthday, showed heart by rallying in the middle rounds, using his physicality in clinches and attempting to pressure Haney. However, he struggled to find answers for Haney’s speed and technical prowess, never fully catching up to the champion’s control despite moments of success in forcing a more physical contest.

This victory marks a significant comeback for Haney, who faced scrutiny after a 2024 bout with Ryan Garcia where he was dropped three times in a loss later overturned to a no contest due to Garcia’s failed drug test. Moving up to welterweight, Haney proved he belongs among the elite, addressing past criticisms about his ability to take punches and excel in higher divisions.

In his post-fight comments, Haney reflected on his journey, stating, “In 2024, I lost everything. Everything came crashing down on me. In 2025, I came to get it back. In 2026, I’m coming for everything.” This win opens up numerous opportunities in the stacked welterweight division, with potential matchups including a highly anticipated rematch with Garcia or clashes with other champions.

Haney and his team expressed willingness to face all comers, signaling his intent to unify titles and solidify his legacy. With this dominant display, he not only captured a third world title but also reestablished himself as a force in boxing, setting the stage for compelling fights ahead in 2026.
