Former Hill staffer charged for allegedly staging her own violent assault

A former congressional staffer, Natalie Greene, has been charged with orchestrating her own violent assault, in which she paid an individual to inflict cuts and write derogatory political messages on her body as part of a staged attack. The incident, which occurred in July, led to federal charges of conspiracy and making false statements after an investigation revealed the hoax.

On July 23, a co-conspirator called 911 to report that Greene and she were attacked by three men while walking on a trail in Egg Harbor Township, New Jersey. The caller claimed the attackers made political remarks and referenced Greene’s work for Republican Representative Jeff Van Drew. When police arrived, they found Greene with her hands and feet bound by zip ties, screaming and crying, with numerous cuts on her face and upper body.

Investigators determined that Greene had paid a body modification artist $500 to make the cuts on her body before the staged incident. Messages written in black marker included “TRUMP WHORE” on her stomach and “Van Drew IS RACIST” on her back, which she alleged were done by the attackers. However, evidence showed that the injuries were self-inflicted as part of the hoax.

Greene, 26, now faces charges of conspiracy to convey false statements and hoaxes, as well as making false statements to federal law enforcement. Each charge carries a maximum penalty of five years in prison, and she could face up to 10 years if convicted on both counts. She made her first court appearance on Wednesday and was released on a $200,000 bond.

The investigation uncovered that zip ties similar to those used in the staging were found in Greene’s car, and her co-conspirator’s phone had been used to search for “zip ties near me” two days prior. A receipt from the artist confirmed the payment for the scarification, solidifying the case against her.

In response, Van Drew’s office issued a statement expressing sadness and confirming that Greene is no longer associated with his office. They offered thoughts and prayers, hoping she receives necessary care. The case has attracted attention due to its political elements and the use of inflammatory language.

This incident raises concerns about the credibility of reported crimes and their impact on public discourse. Federal prosecutors are handling the case to prevent similar hoaxes, and Greene’s legal proceedings will continue. The story highlights the intersection of personal actions and political narratives in contemporary society.
