Kirk recalled sprinting out of the treatment center, collapsing in the parking lot, and immediately calling security to protect their two young children, entering what she called an ‘unbelievable nightmare.’
The morning of the assassination, Charlie had left their Arizona home early for the event in Orem, Utah, after Erika encouraged him to sleep in their daughter’s room for a better rest. She revealed that he briefly entered their bedroom to retrieve his wedding ring and necklace but left without a kiss goodbye, a moment she deeply regrets. Erika remained in Arizona that day to care for her mother, who was experiencing a medical issue, while Charlie headed to the campus event filled with excitement.
