Arise Sir David: Beckham says being knighted is his proudest moment

Former England football captain David Beckham was knighted by King Charles III at Windsor Castle on November 4, 2025, in a ceremony that he described as the proudest moment of his life. The former Manchester United star received the honor for his services to sport and charity, accompanied by his wife Victoria, now Lady Beckham, and his parents Ted and Sandra.

Beckham expressed his deep gratitude and patriotism, stating, “I couldn’t be prouder. People know how patriotic I am – I love my country.” He emphasized the importance of the monarchy to his family and how it is a topic of fascination worldwide during his travels. The 50-year-old reflected on his humble beginnings, noting that as a young boy from Leytonstone in east London, he never imagined such an honor.

The footballer’s attire for the occasion was a grey three-piece suit crafted by his wife Victoria, inspired by vintage morning suits worn by King Charles in his youth. Beckham shared that the King was “quite impressed” with the suit, adding that Charles has inspired many of his looks over the years. This personal touch highlighted the close relationship between Beckham and the royal family, including their shared interest in beekeeping and his role as an ambassador for The King’s Foundation.

Beckham’s illustrious career includes 115 caps for England and successful stints with clubs like Manchester United, Real Madrid, LA Galaxy, Paris St-Germain, and AC Milan, retiring in 2013. Beyond football, he played a key role in securing the 2012 London Olympics and has been a UNICEF ambassador since 2005. In 2015, he launched the “7” fund to support children in crisis, named after his iconic shirt number, and more recently co-founded Inter Miami in Major League Soccer.

The investiture ceremony also honored other notable figures, including Nobel Prize-winning novelist Sir Kazuo Ishiguro, who was made a Companion of Honour, and West End star Dame Elaine Paige, recognized for services to music and charity. Dame Elaine, 77, wore a hat by a milliner to the late Queen and carried a bag designed by Lady Beckham, expressing her joy at receiving the honor for her passion and six decades in showbusiness.

Looking ahead, Beckham’s knighthood cements his legacy not only in sports but also in philanthropy and public service. As an ambassador for The King’s Foundation since 2024, he supports educational programs focused on nature, continuing his commitment to charitable causes. This honor follows his OBE in 2003, awarded by Queen Elizabeth II, and underscores his enduring impact on British culture and society, with the event drawing global attention to the UK honors system.
