Australia has unveiled its 15-player squad for the opening Ashes Test in Perth, with Steve Smith taking over the captaincy from the injured Pat Cummins and three uncapped players earning their first call-ups.
The squad was announced on November 5, 2025, by Cricket Australia, with chairman of selectors George Bailey stating that it provides good balance and allows the team to gather more information from domestic matches before the Test. Smith, a veteran with extensive Ashes experience, leads the side, while Travis Head serves as vice-captain, stepping up in Cummins’ absence due to a back injury that may see him return later in the series.
Three players are poised for their Test debuts: batsman Jake Weatherald and bowlers Brendan Doggett and Sean Abbott. Weatherald, known for his attacking style in domestic cricket, is a strong candidate to open alongside Usman Khawaja, offering flexibility in the top order. Doggett brings accuracy and bounce from his Sheffield Shield performances, and Abbott adds value as an all-rounder with both batting and bowling skills.
The squad retains a core of experienced players, including Usman Khawaja, Marnus Labuschagne, Nathan Lyon, Mitchell Starc, and Josh Hazlewood, ensuring stability. Wicketkeeper Alex Carey remains the first choice, backed by Josh Inglis, while all-rounders Cameron Green and Beau Webster bolster the team’s options with their versatility and recent returns from injury.
Notable exclusions include Sam Konstas, who opened in recent Tests but has struggled for form this season, highlighting the selectors’ focus on current performance. The decision reflects a strategy to reward players demonstrating fitness and consistency in domestic competitions, such as the Sheffield Shield, where 14 squad members are set to play ahead of the Test.
The first Ashes Test is scheduled from November 21 to 25 at Optus Stadium in Perth, followed by matches in Brisbane, Adelaide, Melbourne, and Sydney, concluding in early January. England named its 16-man squad in September, captained by Ben Stokes, setting the stage for a highly anticipated series between the historic rivals.
With the final playing XI to be confirmed closer to the match, based on player form and conditions, Australia aims to maintain its strong home record in Ashes contests. The blend of seasoned campaigners and new talent underscores a balanced approach as the team prepares for the intense five-match series over seven weeks.
