Heat’s Rozier faced $8M tax lien from IRS in ’23

Miami Heat guard Terry Rozier faced an $8.2 million federal tax lien from the IRS in 2023, coinciding with his alleged involvement in a gambling scheme that led to his recent arrest and NBA leave. The financial and legal troubles have raised questions about integrity in professional sports.

The IRS filed the $8,218,211 tax lien in Broward County, Florida, in November 2023, targeting Rozier’s residence and indicating significant unpaid taxes. According to county records, no lien release has been filed, suggesting the debt may remain unresolved. Florida tax attorney Steven N. Klitzner noted that such liens follow past due notices, meaning Rozier likely had prior awareness of the obligation.

This tax issue emerged alongside federal charges accusing Rozier of conspiracy to commit wire fraud and money laundering. He is alleged to have provided nonpublic information about plans to leave a March 2023 game early due to a foot injury to his friend, Deniro Laster. Laster then sold this information to bettors for approximately $100,000, as detailed in an indictment unsealed last week.

Rozier reportedly paid for Laster to travel to Philadelphia to collect the proceeds and counted the money with him at his home. In response, Rozier’s attorney, Jim Trusty, stated that his client is not a gambler and looks forward to contesting the charges, emphasizing Rozier’s cooperation with initial NBA investigations. The NBA had probed the matter in 2023 but found insufficient evidence of rule violations at the time.

Following the indictment, the league placed Rozier on leave, with Commissioner Adam Silver acknowledging Rozier’s prior cooperation but noting the new evidence warranted federal action. This case is part of broader gambling investigations that led to 34 arrests, including former NBA player Chauncey Billups, highlighting concerns about misconduct in sports.

Financially, Rozier signed a four-year, $96.3 million contract with the Charlotte Hornets in 2021 and was traded to Miami in 2024, with career on-court earnings totaling $161.7 million. Despite this, records show a construction lien of about $271,000 filed against him in 2022 for work on his $5.3 million property, with $250,000 paid by July 2023.

The tax lien address corresponds to GMB Chronicles, a California company incorporated in 2024 with Rozier as an officer, which holds trademark rights to his nickname “Scary Terry.” The unresolved debt and legal charges could have lasting implications for Rozier’s career and the NBA’s approach to gambling integrity.

As the federal case progresses, Rozier faces potential fines, imprisonment, and suspension from the NBA, while the league may strengthen its policies to prevent similar incidents. The situation underscores the risks of financial mismanagement and gambling in professional athletics.
