Cataurus Hicks makes an amazing one-handed TD catch for Pitt

Cataurus Hicks made a spectacular one-handed touchdown catch for the University of Pittsburgh in a dominant 61-9 victory over crosstown rival Duquesne on Saturday, August 30, 2025, highlighting a game where Pitt’s offense overcame a slow start to score eight touchdowns. The catch, which occurred just before halftime, was a key moment in Eli Holstein’s impressive return from injury, showcasing the team’s offensive potential for the season.

In the season opener at Acrisure Stadium, Pitt quarterback Eli Holstein connected with Hicks for a 16-yard touchdown pass, with Hicks making an incredible one-handed grab in the end zone against coverage from Duquesne’s DJ Cerisier. This was Hicks’ second touchdown of the game, emphasizing his immediate impact as a transfer wide receiver from Louisville. Holstein, playing his first game since a season-ending ankle injury in November 2024, threw four touchdown passes and ran for another, demonstrating resilience and skill as he led the offense with 15 completions for 220 yards.

The Panthers started slowly, going three-and-out on their first offensive drive, but quickly turned the tide when Desmond Reid returned a punt 88 yards for a touchdown—the longest punt return in Acrisure Stadium history. Reid, who had a similar explosive play in last year’s opener, finished with two touchdowns, including a 53-yard rushing score in the second half, reinforcing his role as a dynamic playmaker.

Duquesne managed to narrow the gap to 14-6 after a 59-yard pass from Tyler Riddell to Joe Isabella set up a touchdown pass to B.J. Alexander. However, Pitt’s defense responded with a key pass interference penalty that led to a first-and-goal, and Juelz Goff scored from a yard out to extend the lead to 20-6 after a missed extra point. The Panthers never relinquished control, scoring on consecutive drives to build momentum.

Hicks’ one-handed catch came on a perfectly thrown ball by Holstein, who described it as a great throw to a dynamic player. Pitt coach Pat Narduzzi praised the execution, calling it a beautiful shot and highlighting the chemistry between Holstein and his receivers. Teammates, including Reid, expressed high expectations for Hicks, noting that such plays are expected from him due to his talent and work ethic.

Holstein’s performance was a relief after his long recovery, and he expressed excitement about being back on the field, contributing to the team’s success. The offense accumulated 512 total yards, with contributions from multiple players, including backup quarterback Cole Gonzalez, who added a 60-yard touchdown pass to Bryce Yates late in the game.

The victory marks a strong start to Pitt’s season, emphasizing their offensive firepower and defensive capabilities. As the team looks ahead to tougher ACC competition, this win provides confidence and momentum. Hicks’ catch is likely to be a contender for catch of the year and symbolizes the potential of Pitt’s revamped receiving corps.
