DeBoer: ‘No excuses’ for Tide’s tumble in Tally

In a stunning upset, the Alabama Crimson Tide fell 31-17 to the Florida State Seminoles in their 2025 season opener on August 30, with head coach Kalen DeBoer emphasizing there are ‘no excuses’ for the disappointing performance.

The game began promisingly for Alabama, ranked No. 8, with a methodical 16-play, 75-yard drive resulting in a touchdown. However, the momentum shifted as Florida State, a team that finished 2-10 last season, adjusted defensively and began to dominate the line of scrimmage. The Seminoles’ offense, under new coordinator Gus Malzahn, rushed for 230 yards, with transfer quarterback Tommy Castellanos contributing 78 yards and a touchdown on the ground.

Alabama’s offense struggled significantly after the initial drive. The run game was ineffective, totaling only 87 yards, and quarterback Ty Simpson faced constant pressure, being sacked three times and completing just 1-of-10 passes for 30 yards when pressured. The team’s inability to finish drives was evident, as they had seven possessions in Florida State territory but scored only 17 points.

Defensively, the Crimson Tide failed to make key stops, recording only one sack and three tackles for loss. The absence of starting defensive tackle Tim Keenan III was felt, but DeBoer refused to use it as an excuse, stating that the team must play their style of football regardless.

DeBoer took full responsibility for the loss, acknowledging that it ‘falls on everyone’ and highlighting issues with competitive stamina and early hesitation. He expressed belief in the team’s chemistry and work ethic but emphasized the need for immediate improvement. The defeat snapped Alabama’s 23-game win streak in season openers and raised concerns about DeBoer’s record against unranked teams, which now stands at 6-4 compared to Nick Saban’s 119-1.

The loss also saw star receiver Ryan Williams exit with a concussion, adding to the team’s challenges. Social media and analysts quickly criticized DeBoer, with some questioning his ability to maintain Alabama’s elite status post-Saban.

Looking ahead, Alabama must address these shortcomings quickly, with a tough schedule ahead. The team’s response to this adversity will be crucial for their College Football Playoff aspirations and DeBoer’s tenure. Despite the setback, DeBoer remains optimistic, focusing on daily improvements and the next game.
