Denmark summons US envoy after report of Americans carrying out influence operations in Greenland

Denmark has summoned the top US diplomat in Copenhagen following reports that Americans with connections to President Donald Trump have been conducting covert influence operations in Greenland, aimed at promoting its secession from Denmark. This move underscores growing tensions between the two NATO allies over US ambitions in the Arctic territory.

The Danish foreign ministry summoned US chargé d’affaires Mark Stroh on Wednesday after national broadcaster DR reported that at least three individuals linked to Trump’s administration were involved in influence campaigns. DR cited multiple unnamed sources who believe the goal is to weaken Denmark’s relationship with Greenland from within.

According to the report, these Americans have been compiling lists of Greenlanders who are supportive or opposed to US control, with the intention of recruiting them for a secession movement. The operations are alleged to include both traditional influence tactics and potential disinformation efforts.

Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen condemned any interference, stating that ‘any attempt to interfere in the internal affairs of the Kingdom will of course be unacceptable.’ He emphasized the close cooperation between Denmark and Greenland, which is based on mutual trust.

The Danish Security and Intelligence Service (PET) warned that Greenland is a target for various influence campaigns, particularly in the current geopolitical context. PET has strengthened its presence in Greenland and is working closely with local authorities to counter such threats.

This incident is the latest in a series of diplomatic strains between the US and Denmark. President Trump has repeatedly expressed interest in annexing Greenland, citing its strategic location and resources, and has not ruled out using force. Vice-President JD Vance has criticized Denmark’s investment in the territory.

In May, Denmark summoned the US envoy over similar reports of intelligence gathering focused on Greenland. At that time, US officials did not deny the allegations but accused media of undermining security.

The ongoing situation highlights the fragility of US-Denmark relations under the current administration and raises concerns about the stability of NATO alliances. Greenland, with its autonomy under Denmark, has consistently rejected any notion of being sold or taken over.

Moving forward, Denmark is likely to seek clarification from the US and may escalate the matter through diplomatic channels. The US embassy has not yet commented on the latest allegations, leaving room for further developments.
