Goalie fight breaks out at Stadium Series after scrum in Bruins’ net

A rare goalie fight between Tampa Bay Lightning’s Andrei Vasilevskiy and Boston Bruins’ Jeremy Swayman ignited the NHL Stadium Series outdoor game, leading to a historic comeback victory for the Lightning. This marked the first goalie fight in an NHL outdoor game and became a pivotal moment in the contest.

The altercation occurred midway through the second period at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Florida, with the Bruins leading 5-2. After Lightning forward Brandon Hagel attempted to poke a loose puck from under Swayman, the Bruins goaltender tackled Hagel, leading to a scrum. Vasilevskiy, seeing Swayman involved, skated from his crease to center ice, prompting Swayman to drop his gloves and helmet for a confrontation.

Vasilevskiy, known as ‘The Big Cat,’ quickly engaged Swayman, landing several left-handed punches before wrestling him to the ice. Both players showed mutual respect after the fight, with Vasilevskiy tapping Swayman on the head and both exchanging appreciative words. The crowd of nearly 65,000 fans erupted in cheers, and players from both benches stood to applaud the rare display of goaltender pugilism.

The fight resulted in five-minute majors for both goalies, but more importantly, it shifted the momentum of the game. Lightning players credited the emotional boost from the fight for awakening their team. In the subsequent minutes, Tampa Bay capitalized on power-play opportunities, scoring twice to cut the deficit to 5-4 heading into the third period.

In the final frame, Nikita Kucherov tied the game, and the Lightning eventually secured a 6-5 victory in a shootout. The comeback from a 5-1 deficit marked the largest in franchise history and the largest ever in an NHL outdoor game. Coach Jon Cooper acknowledged the fight as a turning point, noting that the team needed an emotional spark.

Historically, this was the first goalie fight in an NHL outdoor game, adding to the uniqueness of the Stadium Series event. It also represented the second goalie fight in the league within two weeks, following a scrap between San Jose’s Alex Nedeljkovic and Florida’s Sergei Bobrovsky earlier in January. Prior to these incidents, no goalies had fought in an NHL game since 2020.

The event highlights a growing trend of increased aggression among goaltenders, possibly influenced by the high stakes of outdoor games and playoff races. With the Lightning improving to the best record in the Eastern Conference and the Bruins holding a playoff spot, the fight may be remembered as a defining moment in the 2025-26 NHL season.

Moving forward, the NHL may see more such encounters as goalies embrace physical play, but the sportsmanship displayed by Vasilevskiy and Swayman sets a positive example. The game will be replayed for its dramatic fight and comeback, cementing its place in hockey lore.
