Welcome to the offseason: What you need to know about key dates, biggest questions

The NFL offseason has officially commenced after the Seattle Seahawks’ stunning 29-13 victory over the New England Patriots in Super Bowl LX, a game where the Seahawks defied odds with a 1.1% preseason chance to win. This marks the beginning of a crucial period for all 32 teams, with a series of key dates and major questions that will define the 2026 season.

The offseason calendar kicks off with the franchise tag designation period starting February 17, followed by the scouting combine in Indianapolis from February 23 to March 2. Free agency negotiations begin March 9, with deals becoming official on March 11, and the NFL draft is scheduled for April 23-25 in Pittsburgh. These events will drive roster transformations across the league.

Retirement decisions loom large, particularly for future Hall of Famers Aaron Rodgers and Travis Kelce. Rodgers, 42, has not committed to playing in 2026, and his choice could influence the Pittsburgh Steelers, who hired his former coach Mike McCarthy. Kelce, 36, is contemplating his future with the Kansas City Chiefs after another productive season.

The quarterback market is unusually scarce, with nearly a third of NFL teams seeking starters. Free agents like Daniel Jones, Malik Willis, and Gardner Minshew are available, but trades for established players such as Kyler Murray of the Arizona Cardinals or Tua Tagovailoa of the Miami Dolphins may be more attractive. The Las Vegas Raiders are poised to select Indiana quarterback Fernando Mendoza first overall in the draft.

Free agency features standout edge rushers Trey Hendrickson of the Cincinnati Bengals and Odafe Oweh of the Los Angeles Chargers, along with offensive tackles Rasheed Walker and Braden Smith. Dallas Cowboys receiver George Pickens, coming off a monster year, is set for a lucrative deal. Meanwhile, the 2023 draft class, including Texans quarterback C.J. Stroud and Falcons running back Bijan Robinson, is eligible for contract extensions.

Coaching turnover has been significant, with 10 new head coaches and 21 new offensive coordinators, meaning half the league will have new playcallers. Diversity remains an issue, as only Robert Saleh of the Tennessee Titans was hired from a minority background, sparking discussions on improving the Rooney Rule and accelerator programs.

League rules are under review, especially after the kickoff return rate rose to 74.5% in 2025 but concussion rates doubled to 1.69%. The NFL is considering adjustments to balance safety and excitement. Additionally, there is momentum to allow replay officials to throw flags for obvious missed penalties, particularly on hits to quarterbacks.

The NFL Players Association is in transition following Lloyd Howell’s resignation, with David White serving as interim executive director. Legal challenges from Jon Gruden and Brian Flores over arbitration processes could have broader implications. The tush push, nearly banned last offseason, may face further scrutiny.

As teams navigate these complexities, the offseason will set the foundation for the 2026 campaign, with retirements, trades, and policy changes shaping the path to Super Bowl LXI in what promises to be a transformative period for the league.
