Eagles Hire Packers QB Coach Sean Mannion as New Offensive Coordinator

The Philadelphia Eagles have hired Sean Mannion, the Green Bay Packers’ quarterbacks coach, as their new offensive coordinator, the team announced on January 29, 2026. This move aims to address offensive struggles that derailed the Eagles’ season, with Mannion bringing youthful energy and a fresh perspective to playcalling duties.

Mannion, 33, transitions to the Eagles after two years on the Packers’ coaching staff, where he served as an offensive assistant in 2024 before being promoted to quarterbacks coach for the 2025 campaign. A former NFL quarterback drafted by the Los Angeles Rams in 2015, he played nine seasons, learning from offensive innovators like Sean McVay and Klint Kubiak. His playing experience, combined with his recent work with Packers quarterback Jordan Love, positions him as a promising but inexperienced candidate for the coordinator role.

The Eagles’ search for a new offensive leader began after firing Kevin Patullo on January 13, following a season where the offense plummeted to 19th in scoring and 24th in total yards. Head coach Nick Sirianni conducted interviews with several candidates, including veteran playcallers, but ultimately chose Mannion for his strategic insights and potential. “It was quickly apparent in meeting with Sean that he is a bright young coach with a tremendous future,” Sirianni said in a statement, expressing confidence in Mannion’s ability to grow into the position.

Philadelphia’s offensive decline in 2025 marked a significant setback for a team with a high-priced roster, contributing to an early playoff exit against the San Francisco 49ers. The Eagles’ defense remained stout, but the offense’s inability to sustain drives and score consistently highlighted the need for change. Mannion’s hire signals a shift towards innovation, with expectations that he will introduce more pre-snap motion and creative schemes, influenced by his time under Packers coach Matt LaFleur.

Despite his limited coaching background, Mannion’s familiarity with modern NFL offenses offers hope for a turnaround. He has never called plays at the professional level, which raises questions about his readiness for such a critical role. However, the Eagles are prepared to grant him autonomy, though Sirianni may oversee the transition to ensure stability. This approach mirrors past successes, such as when Kellen Moore revitalized the offense en route to a Super Bowl victory.

For quarterback Jalen Hurts, Mannion becomes his fifth offensive coordinator since 2021, underscoring the constant change he has endured. Hurts has publicly sought consistency in playcalling, and Mannion’s ability to build a lasting partnership will be key to the Eagles’ success. The offense features elite talents like wide receiver A.J. Brown and running back Saquon Barkley, providing Mannion with tools to implement his vision effectively.

The challenges ahead are substantial, as Mannion must quickly adapt to play-calling while navigating the pressures of Philadelphia’s passionate fan base. If he can translate his theoretical knowledge into practical success, the Eagles could rebound strongly in 2026. The offseason will be pivotal for installing his system and fostering cohesion, with the goal of restoring the offense to its former dominance and supporting a championship-caliber defense.
