Russia hits Ukraine with rarely used Oreshnik missile in fresh strikes

Russia has escalated its war in Ukraine by firing the advanced Oreshnik hypersonic missile in overnight strikes on western Ukraine, signaling a direct warning to NATO and the West while inflicting civilian casualties and severe damage to critical infrastructure. The attack, which occurred on the night of January 8-9, 2026, near the border with Poland, represents a significant escalation in Moscow’s campaign and has drawn swift condemnation from Ukrainian and Western leaders.

Russian forces launched a barrage of hundreds of drones, ballistic missiles, and cruise missiles targeting energy facilities and civilian areas in Kyiv and the Lviv region. The Oreshnik, an intermediate-range ballistic missile capable of carrying nuclear or conventional warheads at hypersonic speeds, was used for only the second time since its debut in 2024. Ukrainian officials reported that debris from the missile was found in Lviv, classifying its use against civilian infrastructure as a war crime.

The strikes resulted in at least four deaths and two dozen injuries in Kyiv, including an emergency worker killed during rescue operations. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that the attacks aimed to disrupt normal life amid a severe cold snap, with over half a million households left without power in the Kyiv region alone. Mayor Vitali Klitschko urged residents with means to temporarily leave the city due to widespread outages in heating, electricity, and water services.

Moscow justified the assault as retaliation for an alleged Ukrainian drone strike on Russian President Vladimir Putin’s residence last month, a claim denied by both Kyiv and U.S. officials. The Russian Defense Ministry described it as a ‘massive strike with high-precision long-range weapons,’ including the Oreshnik system. This move appears calculated to test Western resolve, as the missile’s deployment close to NATO borders raises strategic tensions.

International response was immediate and critical. European Union foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas called the Oreshnik strike ‘a clear escalation against Ukraine and meant as a warning to Europe and to the US.’ British, German, and French leaders jointly condemned Russia’s actions as ‘escalatory and unacceptable,’ while Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha demanded strong transatlantic responses to what he termed a ‘grave threat’ to European security.

The Oreshnik missile, which Russia claims is nearly impossible to intercept due to its hypersonic speed, has been viewed with skepticism by some Western analysts regarding its battlefield impact. However, its use underscores Moscow’s willingness to deploy advanced weaponry in a conflict that has now lasted nearly four years. The attack also damaged civilian vessels near Ukrainian ports, resulting in additional casualties and further highlighting the war’s humanitarian toll.

Looking ahead, the strikes have intensified calls for increased military and diplomatic pressure on Russia, with Ukraine urging allies to bolster support. The incident complicates ongoing peace efforts, as Russia recently rejected a European troop deployment plan post-ceasefire, branding it an ‘axis of war.’ As winter deepens, the targeting of energy infrastructure threatens to exacerbate Ukraine’s humanitarian crisis, setting the stage for continued international scrutiny and potential countermeasures.
