Families shocked Swiss ski bar was not inspected for years before deadly fire

A devastating fire at a Swiss ski resort bar on New Year’s Eve has left 40 people dead and 116 injured, with authorities admitting the venue had not undergone mandatory safety inspections for five years, sparking outrage among victims’ families.

The fire broke out at Le Constellation bar in Crans-Montana during a crowded celebration, rapidly engulfing the basement party room. Initial investigations suggest that sparklers attached to champagne bottles were held too close to the ceiling, igniting sound-insulating foam. The blaze caused panic and chaos, with many patrons suffering severe burns as they tried to escape. Rescue teams worked tirelessly to evacuate the injured, who were transported to hospitals across Switzerland and Europe.

Mayor Nicolas Féraud revealed that periodic safety inspections had not been conducted between 2020 and 2025, contrary to local bylaws requiring annual checks. He expressed profound regret and accepted responsibility, attributing the lapse to a small team responsible for over 10,000 buildings. Lawyers for the victims’ families demanded accountability, calling for urgent investigations into municipal failures.

The bar’s managers, French couple Jacques and Jessica Moretti, are under criminal investigation for suspected manslaughter by negligence. They stated they were ‘devastated’ and pledged full cooperation. Authorities have identified all injured individuals, with 83 still hospitalized, and victims ranged from 14 to 39 years old, including eight minors.

In response, the municipality has banned sparklers in local venues and is reviewing safety protocols. A memorial ceremony is planned, with French President Emmanuel Macron expected to attend. The incident highlights concerns about fire safety enforcement in Swiss municipalities and ongoing investigations aim to establish full responsibility.
