Maye rallies Pats after last week’s ‘wake-up call’

In a dramatic Sunday Night Football clash, the New England Patriots clinched a playoff spot with a 28-24 comeback victory over the Baltimore Ravens, spearheaded by quarterback Drake Maye’s stellar performance. This win avenged last week’s disappointing loss and underscored the Patriots’ resilience as they eye the AFC East title.

The game, played in Baltimore on December 21, 2025, saw the Ravens take an early lead with a 21-yard touchdown run by Derrick Henry in the first quarter. The Patriots struggled initially, with Maye throwing an interception, but managed to tie the game 10-10 by halftime. However, the momentum shifted when Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson left the field in the second quarter with a back injury, forcing backup Tyler Huntley into action.

Despite Jackson’s absence, Baltimore extended their lead in the third quarter, with Zay Flowers scoring on an 18-yard end around to make it 17-13. The Ravens further increased their advantage to 24-13 early in the fourth quarter after a 2-yard run by Henry, putting the Patriots in an 11-point hole. At this critical juncture, Maye and the Patriots’ offense ignited for a remarkable rally.

Maye, demonstrating poise under pressure, connected on a 37-yard touchdown pass to Kyle Williams and a successful 2-point conversion to Rhamondre Stevenson, cutting the deficit to 24-21. After forcing a punt, the Patriots embarked on a decisive 89-yard drive. Maye completed key passes, including a 21-yarder to Stefon Diggs on fourth down, setting up Stevenson’s 21-yard rushing touchdown with just over two minutes remaining to take the lead.

The Ravens’ final possession ended in a fumble by Zay Flowers, recovered by Patriots cornerback Marcus Jones, sealing the victory. Maye finished the game with a career-high 380 passing yards and two touchdowns, earning praise from coach Mike Vrabel for his grit and leadership. The win improved New England’s record to 12-3 and marked their seventh consecutive road victory this season.

Reflecting on the game, Maye highlighted the importance of last week’s loss to the Buffalo Bills as a “wake-up call.” In that game, the Patriots had opportunities to win but fell short, making this comeback even more significant. “It was kind of the elephant in the room,” Maye said, emphasizing the team’s determination to avoid consecutive disappointments and build momentum for the playoffs.

With the win, the Patriots secured their first playoff berth since 2021, while the Ravens’ playoff hopes took a severe hit, dropping them to 7-8 and two games behind the Pittsburgh Steelers in the AFC North. Baltimore now faces a steep climb to win the division, requiring wins in their final games and help from other results.

Looking ahead, the Patriots aim to clinch the AFC East title by winning their remaining games against the New York Jets and Miami Dolphins. Maye expressed confidence in the team’s ability to perform in high-pressure situations, stating, “I like our chances when we’re in those scenarios.” As the regular season winds down, New England’s resurgence under Maye positions them as a formidable contender in the upcoming postseason.
