Malachi Toney scores game’s 1st TD late in 4th quarter as Miami ousts Texas A&M

In a defensive struggle defined by windy conditions and stout play on both sides, the Miami Hurricanes narrowly defeated the Texas A&M Aggies 10-3 in the first round of the College Football Playoff on Saturday, December 20, 2025. The game’s only touchdown came with less than two minutes remaining, as wide receiver Malachi Toney caught an 11-yard pass from quarterback Carson Beck to break a 3-3 tie and propel Miami to victory.

Played before over 100,000 fans at Kyle Field in College Station, Texas, the contest saw both offenses stymied for much of the afternoon. A combination of strong winds and excellent defensive execution kept the scoreboard blank through the first half, with both teams missing field goal attempts. Miami’s defense set the tone early, forcing punts and creating turnovers, including a fumble recovery by Keionte Scott and a blocked field goal by Rueben Bain Jr.

The offensive futility continued into the third quarter, with Miami finally breaking the deadlock on a short field goal by Carter Davis early in the period. Texas A&M responded with a field goal of their own from Randy Bond to tie the game at 3-3 with just over eight minutes left in the fourth quarter. As time wound down, it appeared the game might be decided by which defense would crack first.

Miami’s breakthrough came courtesy of a career performance from running back Mark Fletcher Jr. On the decisive drive, Fletcher broke off a 56-yard run to move the Hurricanes deep into Aggies territory. Several plays later, facing a critical third down, offensive coordinator Shannon Dawson called a pop pass play that found Toney in the end zone for the touchdown with 1:42 remaining on the clock.

Texas A&M had one final chance to respond, driving efficiently down the field to the Miami 5-yard line. However, freshman defensive back Bryce Fitzgerald intercepted a pass in the end zone with seconds left to seal the victory for the Hurricanes. Fitzgerald had two interceptions on the day, with his first pick setting up Miami’s earlier field goal attempt.

The win marks Miami’s first-ever victory in the College Football Playoff, validating their inclusion in the expanded field and setting up a quarterfinal matchup against No. 2 seed Ohio State in the Cotton Bowl on December 31. Head coach Mario Cristobal praised his team’s resilience, noting the challenge of winning on the road in a hostile environment against a top-tier opponent.

Individual performances underscored the team effort. Fletcher rushed for a career-high 172 yards, providing the offensive spark when it was most needed. Toney, despite being limited for much of the game by Texas A&M’s defense, set Miami’s single-season receptions record and delivered the game-winning score. Defensively, Bain recorded three sacks, and the unit as a whole sacked Aggies quarterback Marcel Reed six times.

With the victory, Miami advances in the postseason and gains momentum as they prepare for Ohio State. The game highlighted the Hurricanes’ defensive prowess and ability to win close, low-scoring affairs, traits that will be tested against the high-powered Buckeyes offense. For Texas A&M, the loss ends a promising season, but the Aggies demonstrated why they were considered one of the nation’s top teams until the final whistle.
