Sunny Hostin, Joy Behar ‘ruined’ Deborah Roberts’ holiday charity clothing sale for junior staffers

A charity clothing sale hosted by ABC News anchor Deborah Roberts sparked office controversy when her colleagues, “The View” co-hosts Sunny Hostin and Joy Behar, were accused of arriving early and taking the best items before junior staffers could shop. The incident, which occurred last week, highlighted workplace tensions but also underscored the charitable purpose of the event, with all parties eventually clarifying their intentions and contributions.

Roberts organizes the annual sale to purge her closet and raise money for charities such as Citymeals on Wheels, which helps fight hunger among the elderly. She explained in an Instagram video that the sale includes items that no longer bring her joy, from clothing and shoes to ties from her husband, weatherman Al Roker. The event is typically held at ABC’s offices and open to staff, with proceeds dedicated to supporting food insecurity causes.

According to insiders who spoke to Page Six, Hostin and Behar arrived while Roberts’ team was still setting up, “rifled through, took the best of the best,” and then mentioned that payment would be handled later. Hours after they left, a producer reportedly called to ask about the bill and inquire about a discount, which added to the frustration among junior employees. These staffers, who earn less than the high-profile TV personalities, look forward to the sale yearly for affordable designer finds and were described as “livid” over the perceived entitlement.

The backlash prompted Hostin and Behar to address the situation on their “Behind the Table” podcast with executive producer Brian Teta. Hostin said she learned about the sale through her glam team and texted Roberts for permission to come early at 9 a.m., three hours before the official start. She then informed Behar, her “sample sale buddy,” and they attended with Roberts’ approval. Behar dismissed the office chatter as “complete and fake news,” stating she only bought four items, including Chanel earrings as a gift for a staffer, while Hostin purchased five.

Roberts downplayed the conflict, telling Page Six that both co-hosts were excited to shop and contributed generously to charity. She confirmed that Behar paid in cash the next day because she doesn’t use Venmo, and Hostin made a prompt digital payment. Roberts emphasized that the sale’s primary goal is to support charitable organizations, and she was pleased to see colleagues participate, regardless of the timing. She added that the event helps clear her closet and raise funds for good causes.

The episode illustrates the occasional friction in workplace dynamics, especially around shared charitable events. While the early shopping initially caused frustration, it also drew attention to Roberts’ philanthropic efforts, potentially boosting donations. Hostin and Behar’s defense suggests the incident may have been overstated, with all involved ultimately supporting a worthy cause. The sale successfully raised money for charity, and Roberts plans to continue the tradition, aiming for better coordination in the future to ensure all staffers feel included.
