Vandy’s Pavia makes Heisman case in career day

Diego Pavia delivered a historic performance, throwing for a career-high 484 yards and five touchdowns as No. 14 Vanderbilt routed Kentucky 45-17, solidifying his position in the Heisman Trophy conversation and keeping the Commodores’ College Football Playoff hopes alive. The quarterback’s dominant display in Nashville on Saturday showcased his dual-threat abilities and set a new program record for passing yards.

Pavia was nearly flawless from the start, completing passes with precision and connecting on big plays throughout the game. His 71-yard touchdown pass to Tre Richardson in the second quarter represented his longest completion in two seasons at Vanderbilt and helped build an early lead that the Commodores never relinquished. Beyond his arm, Pavia added 48 rushing yards and another score on the ground, demonstrating the versatility that has made him one of college football’s most dynamic players. The performance came on Senior Day, with Pavia participating in pregame ceremonies before putting on a show for the home crowd.

The Vanderbilt quarterback broke Whit Taylor’s 1981 program record of 464 passing yards, cementing his place in Commodores history. His five touchdown passes tied his career high, and he orchestrated an offense that scored 21 points across the second and third quarters to put the game out of reach. Pavia’s efficiency was remarkable, as he avoided turnovers and consistently made smart decisions under pressure. He remained in the game until late in the fourth quarter, eventually exiting to a standing ovation from fans who chanted his name in appreciation.

Vanderbilt coach Clark Lea didn’t hesitate to endorse his quarterback for the Heisman Trophy, calling Pavia “the best player in the country” who “tips the field when he steps on it.” Lea emphasized that the victory was a statement win for the program, which now has its most wins since 2013 and remains in contention for a CFP berth. The coach praised Pavia’s ability to take over games, noting that there are only a few players worldwide with such impact. Pavia himself expressed confidence, stating, “I feel like I’m the best player in college football right now,” and highlighting his readiness for the NFL.

The victory secured Vanderbilt’s first undefeated home schedule since 1982 and only the fourth since 1945, finishing 7-0 at home this season. With a 9-2 record, the Commodores have achieved just their fifth nine-win season in program history and now look to secure the first 10-win season by winning their regular-season finale. Wide receiver Tre Richardson contributed significantly with six catches for 159 yards and three touchdowns, while the defense, led by Martel Hight’s two interceptions, stifled Kentucky’s offense. The team’s overall physicality and execution drew praise from opponents and analysts alike.

Kentucky coach Mark Stoops acknowledged Vanderbilt’s strength, calling them “a very good football team in all areas” and specifically highlighting Pavia as “something else.” The Wildcats saw their three-game winning streak snapped and now need a victory in their finale to become bowl-eligible. Kentucky’s defense, which had held previous SEC opponents to minimal points, struggled to contain Pavia’s explosive plays. The loss drops Kentucky to 5-6 overall, adding urgency to their upcoming matchup against Louisville.

Looking ahead, Vanderbilt visits No. 20 Tennessee for their regular-season finale, where a win would not only achieve that historic 10-win milestone but also strengthen their CFP resume. Pavia has been exceptional over his last three games, accumulating 1,226 passing yards with 11 touchdowns and just one interception, along with 203 rushing yards and three scores. He explicitly addressed NFL scouts, saying, “I want the NFL to know too like I’m NFL ready, and I want my chance,” underscoring his professional aspirations. The Heisman Trophy race intensifies as Pavia’s late-season surge captures national attention.
