‘I told you’: Crockett reacts to MTG’s apology about ‘toxic politics’

Rep. Jasmine Crockett expressed skepticism about Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene’s recent apology for contributing to “toxic politics,” emphasizing that actions must follow words to effect real change in American political discourse. In a CNN interview, Crockett highlighted the ongoing impact of divisive rhetoric and called for accountability from political figures.

During her appearance on “CNN Newsroom” with host Jake Tapper on Monday, November 17, 2025, Crockett was asked about Greene’s Sunday interview on CNN’s “State of the Union,” where Greene apologized for her role in toxic politics and vowed to “put down the knives.” Crockett responded that her own social media post offering support to Greene was meant sarcastically, but contained a kernel of truth about the need for unity. She stressed that all politicians should pay attention to former President Donald Trump’s behavior, whom she described as “the cause of all the confusion and the destruction that we have seen in politics.”

Crockett pointed out that political disagreements have increasingly turned violent, attributing this trend to Trump’s influence on public discourse. She referenced several incidents, including the attack on Paul Pelosi and the murder of local elected leaders, questioning where Greene’s conciliatory tone was during those events. “What is so frustrating for me with not only Marjorie, but MAGA as a whole is, they’re in the find-out phase,” Crockett said, using popular slang to indicate that consequences are now affecting those who previously promoted hostility.

The Texas Democrat also shared personal experiences, noting that she has incurred significant security expenses due to threats fueled by hateful rhetoric from figures like Greene and other MAGA influencers. She lamented that Trump and others have mocked Greene for needing security, calling it hypocritical. “If the president thinks this is a joke, then give us all the money back for the security that we pay for!” Crockett exclaimed, suggesting that such funds could be better used for healthcare or feeding children.

Greene’s apology came amid a public feud with Trump, who withdrew his endorsement of her Georgia Senate bid and called her a “traitor” on Truth Social. In her CNN interview, Greene expressed regret for “taking part in the toxic politics” and said she was working to “put down the knives in politics.” However, Crockett’s reaction underscores the deep skepticism among some Democrats about the sincerity of such gestures from prominent Republicans previously known for inflammatory remarks.

The exchange between Crockett and Greene is part of a longer history of conflict, including a heated House committee meeting in 2024 where Greene insulted Crockett’s appearance, leading to a sharp rebuke from Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. This backdrop adds context to Crockett’s current response, highlighting the personal and political tensions that have characterized their interactions.

Looking ahead, Crockett’s comments reflect broader concerns about the state of political discourse in the United States and the challenges of de-escalating partisan animosity. Her call for concrete actions rather than mere words suggests that rebuilding trust will require demonstrated changes in behavior from all sides of the political spectrum.
