Prince Harry apologises to Canada for wearing LA Dodgers cap during World Series

Prince Harry has issued a light-hearted apology to Canada for wearing a Los Angeles Dodgers baseball cap during the World Series against the Toronto Blue Jays, claiming he was “under duress” when making the sartorial choice. The Duke of Sussex made the remarks during an interview with CTV, where he wore a Blue Jays cap to express his contrition and renewed allegiance.

The incident occurred during Game 4 of the 2025 MLB World Series at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles, where Harry and his wife, Meghan, were guests of the Dodgers’ owner. Harry explained that wearing the home team’s cap felt like “the polite thing to do” given the invitation, and he humorously noted that his thinning hair made any hat a welcome accessory under the bright stadium lights.

His apology came after the cap choice drew criticism from many in Canada, a Commonwealth nation where his father, King Charles III, serves as head of state. Canadians expressed disappointment that Harry did not support the Toronto Blue Jays, the country’s sole representative in Major League Baseball, especially given his royal status and the nation’s ties to the monarchy.

In the CTV interview, Harry quipped, “Firstly, I would like to apologise to Canada for wearing it. Secondly, I was under duress. There wasn’t much choice.” He further pledged his support for the Blue Jays in the remaining games of the series, stating that he rooted for them in Games 5, 6, and 7, despite the Dodgers ultimately winning the championship in a seventh-game decider.

The prince is currently in Toronto for a two-day visit to mark Remembrancetide, participating in events with military veterans and armed forces communities. During his activities, he received a Blue Jays hat while meeting with some of Canada’s oldest veterans at Sunnybrook Hospital’s veterans centre, including a 101-year-old Second World War navy veteran, reinforcing his apology with a symbolic gesture.

Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex, who is a native of Los Angeles, also wore a Dodgers cap at the game but has previously shown support for the Blue Jays. She lived in Toronto for several years while filming the television drama “Suits”, and the city holds significance in her relationship with Harry, as they spent time together there early in their courtship.

The couple’s attendance at the World Series game also sparked reactions among Dodgers fans in the United States, some of whom were displeased with their premium seating arrangements. However, Harry handled the situation with characteristic humor and self-deprecation, aligning with his recent essay on British culture, where he praised “banter” and good-natured ribbing.

Overall, the episode highlights the delicate balance Harry maintains between his royal duties and his life in California, demonstrating how even minor actions can resonate internationally. His apology has been received with amusement and understanding, turning a potential diplomatic faux pas into a moment of shared laughter and underscoring the ongoing adjustments in his post-royal life.
