Man charged after stabbing two teenagers with a fork on a flight from Chicago to Germany

A 28-year-old man has been charged with assault after allegedly stabbing two 17-year-old boys with a metal fork on a Lufthansa flight from Chicago to Germany, forcing the plane to divert to Boston. The incident, which occurred over the weekend, underscores ongoing concerns about in-flight security and passenger safety.

The attack unfolded on Lufthansa Flight 431 from Chicago O’Hare International Airport to Frankfurt, Germany, during the flight’s meal service. According to federal prosecutors, Praneeth Kumar Usiripalli, an Indian national, used a metal fork to stab the teenagers while they were seated in the economy section. The first victim was asleep in a middle seat when he awoke to find Usiripalli standing over him, leading to the initial assault.

Usiripalli allegedly struck the first teenager in the left collarbone area with the fork before immediately turning to the second victim, who was seated nearby. He then stabbed the second 17-year-old in the back of the head, causing a laceration. Both victims sustained non-life-threatening injuries, but the sudden violence sparked panic among passengers and crew, disrupting the otherwise routine transatlantic journey.

When flight attendants intervened to subdue Usiripalli, he responded with further erratic behavior. He formed a gun shape with his fingers, placed it in his mouth, and mimicked pulling a trigger. He also slapped a female passenger and attempted to slap a flight crew member before being restrained by other passengers and crew. This escalation heightened the urgency of the situation, requiring immediate action from the flight team.

In response to the severity of the incident, the pilot decided to divert the flight to Boston Logan International Airport. The plane landed safely, and Usiripalli was arrested upon arrival by federal authorities. The two injured teenagers received medical attention at the scene, and no other serious injuries were reported among the approximately 200 passengers on board.

Usiripalli has been charged with one count of assault with a dangerous weapon with intent to do bodily harm while on an aircraft, a federal offense that carries a potential sentence of up to 10 years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000. He is scheduled to appear in federal court in Boston at a later date, where further legal proceedings will determine the outcome of the case.

Background checks revealed that Usiripalli was previously in the United States on a student visa and enrolled in a master’s program in biblical studies. However, officials stated he no longer has lawful status in the country. His motives remain under investigation, and it is unclear whether he has secured legal representation for the charges.

This incident occurs against a backdrop of heightened tensions in the aviation industry, including delays and staffing shortages linked to the ongoing government shutdown. It highlights vulnerabilities in air travel security and raises questions about screening processes for individuals with unstable immigration status. Authorities continue to investigate the event, with Usiripalli’s court appearance expected to provide more insights into the circumstances and potential preventive measures for future flights.
