Reese Witherspoon on writing a thriller: ‘What do girls in bikinis have to do with solving crime?’

Reese Witherspoon has co-authored her first adult fiction novel, “Gone Before Goodbye,” with bestselling writer Harlan Coben. The thriller centers on a skilled female surgeon, challenging the trope of women in crime stories being defined by their appearance rather than their abilities.

In an exclusive interview with BBC News, Witherspoon revealed that the idea for the book was inspired by her childhood experiences watching James Bond films with her father. She often questioned why female characters were frequently depicted in bikinis, wondering what that had to do with solving crimes. This early skepticism fueled her desire to create a story where a woman’s intellect and professional expertise are at the forefront.

The novel follows Maggie, a talented surgeon who loses her medical license after a series of personal tragedies but is given a second chance by a former colleague. Thrust into a dangerous conspiracy, Maggie must rely on her surgical skills and intuition to navigate the plot. Witherspoon emphasized that she wanted the character to be compelling because of her unique abilities, not her sex appeal or physical prowess.

Witherspoon’s own background influenced the medical theme of the book. Growing up in a military family with parents who were medical professionals, she was surrounded by a sense of service and dedication. This upbringing provided a realistic foundation for Maggie’s character, whom both Witherspoon and Coben view as heroic, reflecting their admiration for the medical profession.

The actress also drew from personal experiences of career setbacks, particularly following her Oscar win for “Walk the Line” and her divorce from Ryan Phillippe. She admitted to feeling creatively stagnant during that period, which parallels Maggie’s journey of hitting rock bottom before rebuilding her life. Witherspoon noted that starting a story with a character at their lowest point creates a powerful narrative arc.

Through her production company, Hello Sunshine, Witherspoon has long championed complex female characters in film and television, such as in “The Morning Show” and “Big Little Lies.” She founded the company in 2011 out of frustration with the lack of substantial roles for women in Hollywood. Her book club, which highlights female-centric stories, complements this mission by promoting literature that often gets adapted for screen.

The collaboration with Coben was a genuine partnership, with both authors deeply involved in the writing process. Coben, known for his bestselling thrillers and successful Netflix adaptations, expressed confidence that “Gone Before Goodbye” will also be adapted for television or film. He hinted that Witherspoon might be considered for the role of Maggie, adding to the anticipation.

“Gone Before Goodbye” is set to be published on October 23 in the UK. Witherspoon sees this venture into novel writing as a new creative frontier, proving that artistic expression knows no age limits. She remains excited about the possibilities ahead, continuing to expand her influence in entertainment and literature.
