WNBA Playoff Berths: Seven Teams Secure Spots for 2025 Postseason

The 2025 WNBA playoffs are nearly set, with seven teams having clinched their spots, led by the Minnesota Lynx who secured the top seed. Only one postseason berth remains up for grabs as the regular season concludes this week.

The Minnesota Lynx were the first to clinch a playoff berth on August 12, following a dominant start with nine consecutive wins. They have maintained their position atop the standings and are poised to break the single-season wins record if they win their remaining games. Despite injuries, including a three-week absence for MVP front-runner Napheesa Collier, the Lynx have shown depth and consistency.

The Atlanta Dream clinched their spot on August 29, propelled by a six-game winning streak in late July and August. Despite injuries to key players like point guard Jordin Canada, the team has leveraged its talent, including Allisha Gray having a career year, to contend for a high seed. Their rebounding prowess and offensive balance have been crucial.

The Las Vegas Aces turned their season around with an 11-game winning streak after a slow start, clinching their playoff berth and positioning themselves to host first-round games. A’ja Wilson has been instrumental, scoring heavily and making history with a 30-point, 20-rebound game. The team’s resurgence has made them serious title contenders.

The Phoenix Mercury secured their place thanks to offseason acquisitions Alyssa Thomas and Satou Sabally, who have formed a potent big three with Kahleah Copper. Thomas has set records with multiple triple-doubles, including becoming the first player with at least 10 points, 15 rebounds, and 15 assists in a game. Their recent form has them jockeying for seeding.

The New York Liberty clinched despite injuries to stars like Breanna Stewart and Jonquel Jones, relying on their depth to stay in the playoff hunt. The Golden State Valkyries made history by becoming the first expansion team to reach the playoffs in their inaugural season, clinching on September 5. Their balanced roster and strong coaching have defied expectations.

The Indiana Fever clinched on September 7, overcoming significant injuries, including Caitlin Clark’s season-ending announcement. Kelsey Mitchell and Aliyah Boston have led the team through adversity, securing a playoff spot for the second consecutive year. Their resilience will be tested in the postseason.

With one spot remaining, the Seattle Storm and Los Angeles Sparks are in contention, but the Storm hold a slight edge. The playoffs begin on September 14, featuring a best-of-three first round, and could extend until October 19 for the Finals.
