‘It was time’: No. 3 QB Staub stars in Colorado win

Ryan Staub, Colorado’s third-string quarterback, seized his opportunity by throwing two touchdown passes in a 31-7 victory over Delaware, impressing head coach Deion Sanders and sparking a quarterback controversy.

In an unexpected turn of events during Colorado’s game against Delaware on Saturday, redshirt sophomore Ryan Staub, who had been the team’s No. 3 quarterback, was called upon and delivered a standout performance. Coach Deion Sanders had planned to give each of his three quarterbacks two series to prove themselves, but Staub’s efficiency forced a change in plans.

Staub entered the game with 45 seconds left in the first half and immediately led a 75-yard touchdown drive, capped by a 21-yard pass to running back Dekalon Taylor. He continued his momentum into the second half, throwing a 71-yard touchdown to receiver Sincere Brown on the opening drive, showcasing his arm strength and poise under pressure.

Sanders, who had prayed about the quarterback situation after a season-opening loss, decided to let the players’ performances “tell its own story.” Staub’s 7-of-10 passing for 157 yards and two touchdowns, with a passer rating of 267.9, clearly outshone presumed starter Kaidon Salter and highly-touted freshman Julian Lewis.

Salter, a transfer from Liberty, started the game and led Colorado to a 10-0 lead but was replaced after two series. He finished with 13-of-16 for 102 yards but no touchdowns, and his later drives ended in punts. Lewis, the five-star recruit, completed only 2-of-4 for 8 yards in limited action, showing his inexperience.

Staub’s background adds to the story; he backed up Shedeur Sanders for two years without transferring, citing his love for the program and process. His only previous start was in the 2023 finale against Utah, where he threw for 195 yards in a loss, but this performance was a breakthrough.

After the game, Sanders presented Staub with a game ball and praised his leadership, calling him “unflappable.” However, Sanders remained coy about who will start in the upcoming Big 12 opener against Houston, stating he knows the direction but won’t reveal it yet.

This development creates a quarterback dilemma for Colorado, as Staub’s emergence challenges the pre-season expectations centered on Salter and Lewis. The team will need to quickly decide on a starter to maintain momentum as they enter conference play.
