Emma Heming reveals Bruce Willis is living in a second home as dementia battle progresses

Emma Heming Willis has disclosed that her husband, actor Bruce Willis, is now residing in a separate home with full-time caregivers to manage his frontotemporal dementia, a decision she describes as one of the most difficult she has faced. This revelation came during an interview with Diane Sawyer that aired on August 27, 2025, highlighting the family’s adjustments to his progressive condition.

Bruce Willis, renowned for roles in films like ‘Die Hard’ and ‘Pulp Fiction,’ was diagnosed with frontotemporal dementia in 2023, a neurological disorder that affects the brain’s frontal and temporal lobes, leading to changes in personality, behavior, and language. Emma first noticed subtle signs before the diagnosis, such as Bruce becoming quieter and less engaged during family interactions, which contrasted sharply with his typically warm and affectionate demeanor.

In the interview, Emma explained that the decision to move Bruce to a second home was necessary to provide him with 24/7 specialized care, ensuring his safety and well-being. She emphasized that this arrangement allows their two young daughters, Mabel and Evelyn, to live in an environment focused on their needs, as Bruce would have wanted, prioritizing stability and normalcy for the children.

Despite his cognitive decline, Bruce remains physically healthy and mobile, largely unaware of his condition. Emma shared that he still recognizes and responds positively to family members, lighting up during visits and engaging in affectionate gestures like holding hands and hugging. The family maintains close ties, frequently visiting him for meals and quality time, ensuring the second home is filled with love and support.

Emma opened up about the emotional challenges of caregiving, admitting that there were moments she questioned their marriage due to the drastic changes in Bruce’s behavior. Understanding the medical underpinnings helped her cope, and she has since become an advocate for caregivers, emphasizing the universal struggles they face, such as isolation and grief.

Her upcoming book, ‘The Unexpected Journey: Finding Strength, Hope, and Yourself on the Caregiving Path,’ set for release on September 7, 2025, delves deeper into their experiences, aiming to offer guidance and solidarity to others in similar situations. The book is part of her broader effort to raise awareness and support for families navigating dementia.

Frontotemporal dementia has no cure, and Emma’s candid discussion sheds light on the practical and emotional adaptations required. The Willis family’s journey underscores the importance of resilience, community, and compassionate care in facing such health crises, serving as an inspiration for many dealing with similar circumstances.
