From seeing ghosts to the Super Bowl: Why the Jets’ former GM believed in Sam Darnold

In an emotional first interview since his 2019 firing, former New York Jets general manager Mike Maccagnan shared his bittersweet feelings as Sam Darnold, the quarterback he drafted third overall in 2018, prepares to start in Super Bowl LX for the Seattle Seahawks, underscoring a journey marked by resilience and redemption.

Maccagnan, now a senior football evaluation specialist, watched from his Houston home last Sunday as Darnold celebrated the NFC championship with the Seahawks. His mind drifted back to Darnold’s pro day at USC and the draft day elation, recalling the voice that said, “We got one,” believing he had found a franchise quarterback.

Darnold played three seasons with the Jets, showing flashes of potential but struggling with a lack of support and infrastructure. In 2021, he was traded to the Carolina Panthers, a move that remains debated among Jets fans. Since then, he has played for four teams, including the San Francisco 49ers and Minnesota Vikings, before landing with the Seahawks.

In the interview, Maccagnan expressed sadness that Darnold couldn’t fulfill his potential in New York but joy that he is now thriving. He emphasized that seeing Darnold succeed is not about vindication but about the satisfaction of a scout’s vision coming true.

Former teammates Jamal Adams, Robbie Chosen, and Kelvin Beachum praised Darnold’s arm talent, work ethic, and character. Adams highlighted Darnold’s resilience, noting that with patience and better coaching, he could have been “The Guy” for the Jets. Chosen pointed out that Darnold’s development was hindered by unstable environments.

A defining moment in Darnold’s career was the 2019 “Ghosts” game, where he threw four interceptions against the New England Patriots and was heard saying, “I’m seeing ghosts.” This incident went viral and haunted his reputation, but Maccagnan and others noted that Darnold has moved past it, now focusing on his on-field performance.

Statistically, Darnold had a rough start with the Jets, ranking low in Total QBR, but in the past two seasons, he has led the Vikings and Seahawks to 14-3 records each, joining Tom Brady in a rare achievement. Meanwhile, the Jets have cycled through quarterbacks without success, extending a losing streak.

Darnold now faces the Patriots in the Super Bowl, a team he has never beaten, with a poor record against them. This matchup adds a layer of narrative as he confronts his past struggles. His journey from being traded and benched to starting in the Super Bowl exemplifies perseverance. Maccagnan concluded by saying Darnold is the one pick he never second-guessed, always believing in his talent. As Super Bowl LX approaches, Darnold’s story serves as a testament to overcoming adversity, and his performance could redefine his legacy in the NFL.
